E-508a Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewer With Frog
Sharp example! The nickel plating grades 99%, with the minor
wear appearing to the right pommel edge. The original factory lacquer
grades 80% with most of the wear appearing to the pommel and lower scabbard
fitting. The pommel displays NO carrying wear. The black bakelite
grip plates also do not exhibit carrying wear to either side. The obverse
side is the checkered variety, retaining crisp edges throughout. The
reverse side is correctly smooth surfaced, showing one storage scrape. The
retaining screws and spanner hardware are in place with both heads exhibiting
plating loss, mild rust and faint period turning signs. The crossguard
medallion is a nice one indeed, with 100% nickel plating and nearly 100%
original factory lacquer. The crossguard has the oval center, which
depicts a raised-out closed wing eagle clutching a cross, in addition to the
bird’s breast housing a vaulted mobile swastika. The reverse oval is
plain. The crossguard and ferrule are a one-piece design with matching
line decorations. The blade is the sawback style remaining in a bright
state with the crossgraining grading 100%. The runner marks are the norm!
The reverse ricasso is stamped “Ges. Geschutz”. The blades grades
mint-! A thick brown colored leather washer is present, grading mint-.
The scabbard shell has one slight indentation to the middle of the reverse side.
VERY difficult to locate! The original factory black paint is a fine
example showing faint wear and a couple of paint spiders. The paint grades
97%! The scabbard mounts are the nickel plated type with the upper
retaining 100% factory lacquer, while the lower grades 40%. The throat is
retained by two side screws exhibiting full plating with both heads displaying
mild turning signs. There is a fine black leather frog attached to the
shell. It is the style having four aluminum rivets in the construction.
The leather shows some wear and age with the reverse side showing NO maker
marks. The black color exhibits some usage wear. A VERY NICE Hewer!
Strong excellent.
