E-511 RAD Enlisted Man’s Hewer by Carl Eickhorn
Very sound, collectible example. It’s made of a very heavy solid material with
a nickel finish indicative of mid-period construction. The plating to the
entire hilt grades 90% with minor lifting throughout. The stag grip plates are
spectacular, having a matching grain with pleasing black, dark brown, tan and
ivory colors. They are retained by screw and spanner devices with the
heads showing signs of, what I believe, is period turning. The blade is a
nice one, showing mild wear. The tip and spine are crisp. The in and out
marks are the norm. The RAD motto “Arbeit Adelt” remains precise,
while the background burnishing grades 65%. The reverse ricasso is
matching etched with the standard RAD triangle and directly below is Ges. Gesch.
Finally, directly below is the Eickhorn logo, being the 1935-41 Squirrel
trademark, and beneath is the company location Solingen. The scabbard
shell is sound and nicely matches the condition of the hilt. The original
black paint rates at least 70% with most of the missing paint being on the
sides. The wheat shafts swirl design and pebbling have outstanding detail with
90% of the recess burnishing intact. The lower fitting exhibits a few mild
storage/carrying marks to the tip and edges. The four matching side
scabbard screws are present and show slight indications of turning. Very
nice example in near excellent condition.
