E-514 RARE RAD Full Stag Enlisted Man’s Hewer by
Carl Eickhorn
The full stag Hewer variation is an early produced piece, and as
such, is quite RARE! For you new collectors, it was exclusively produced
by the firm of Carl Eickhorn. The fittings throughout have 100% silver
finish with an outstanding matching patina. Beautiful! The hilt is a
very heavy solid metal base displaying minor carrying wear and age. The
top of the pommel exhibits a few minor taps, as does the grip-spine. The
ferrule has a wonderful appearance having one minor tap to the left spine edge.
The quillon edge contains a few light-taps to the obverse side and four major
hits to the reverse side. Sounds much worse then it really is! The
original background burnishing to the quillon line decoration is like-new!
The stag grip plates are a sight to see, having been fitted by a true master!
They are fit to the hilt via the counter sunken screw and spanner method with
the screw heads having minor period turning signs. The plates have taken
on a golden hue appearance throughout the highlights and edges, while the
recessed areas are a dark brown. In addition, the reverse plate is darker
then the obverse side. The impressive bowie style blade remains bright and
shiny having been cleaned by a previous owner. The spine, tip and edge
remain crisp throughout. There is extensive smudging to both sides in
additional to minor edge sharpening. The RAD blade motto is crisp and
precise with 50% thinning to the background burnishing. The blade grades
very good! The reverse ricasso is etched with the smaller double oval
Eickhorn trademark used from 1933-1935. The center squirrel has the
serrated tail. Above is the RAD triangle and Ges. Gesch.. The
scabbard shell is straight throughout! The surface of this example
contains a wartime black paint, grading 97% with even wear to both sides.
The scabbard fittings perfectly match the look of the hilt. The fittings
are very impressive, being deeply stamped with pearling designs along the
pointed edges. The line RAD shovel with superimposed swastika rests on
wheat shafts. The upper fitting has the very appealing RAD swirls.
The background burnishing to the upper fitting rates 100%, while the lower one
grades a thin 50%! The four domehead side screws are intact showing minor
turning signs. A MUST for the ADVANCED blade collector! Excellent.
