E-515a Early RAD Enlisted Man’s Hewer by Ed. Wusthof
Typical of the vast majority of RAD Enlisted Man’s Hewers, this piece has seen
real usage and wear. The fittings have a gorgeous patina throughout!
The hilt appears to be solid nickel displaying minimal wear/age. Other
then a couple of minor marks here and there, the hilt is in beautiful condition!
The original factory darkening remains in the backgrounds of the quillon
grooves. The genuine stag grip plates are finely carved having very
appealing brown/tan/light black colors. What a look! They are
retained by screw and spanner devices having turning signs to the obverse heads.
The bowie style blade exhibits wear and age in addition to having edge
sharpening, smudging and mild abrasive cleaning marks. Sounds MUCH worse
then it really is! The spine, edge and tip are crisp, but as previously
stated; the edge has had some period sharpening. The RAD motto “Arbeit
adelt” is surprisingly crisp/precise with almost all the backgrounding gone.
The blade grades good! The reverse ricasso is etched with the RAD triangle
and underneath is Ges. Gesch. Below are double oval circles containing the
company name and location Ed Wusthof/Solingen. Inside the center of the
inner most circle is the three-pronged devil’s pitchfork. The scabbard
shell has period carrying hits and nicks to all sides, especially to the left
side. The original black paint grades 65% with the majority of wear
confined to the reverse side. The scabbard fittings are crisp with the
upper bearing the stamped complicated RAD swirls while the lower mount houses
the swastika emblazoned shovel over wheat shafts. The upper shows NO real
carrying wear while the lower mount has a couple of taps and some scraping.
The four flathead side screws are present, but appear bugged! A GOOD
collectible example! Very good.
