E-551a Imperial Hunting Hirschfanger With Skinning
Knife With Gilded Finish by Clemen & Jung
This GORGEOUS piece measures approximately 21.75”overall length and
remains in very collectible condition! The workmanship is exquisite having
been produced by a true master! The finish throughout is a fire-gilded
over a brass base grading at least 99%! Spectacular! The pommel is
the flared-out and plain variety with the center having a raised knob that is
part of the one-piece pommel cap. The blade tang extends through the
pommel cap and is then peened-over to tightly affix the tang to the hilt.
The pommel cap has dual decorative lines running around the base. The cap
retains crisp edges and smooth surfaces. The grip is genuine stag being
very smooth exhibiting an array of lighter colored browns and tans with black
recesses. The grip-to-pommel cap and grip-to-ferrule is expertly set!
The obverse side is adorned with three matching fire gilded over a brass based
smooth oblong bosses that remain tightly set. The matching ferrule is the
style decorated with two single lines that extend around the circumference.
The crossguard is the up and down style with the quillon ending in detailed deer
hooves. The clamshell is the standard fluted type. The blade is a
massive 15.75” in length being the double engraved style remaining bright and
shiny. The blade edges and spine exhibit a few minor hits while the tip is
crisp. There is extensive smudging to both sides in addition to a few
pitting spots. The obverse and reverse sides are adorned with floral
designs with a rifle blended into the design. In addition to the floral
designs, the obverse side has one small panel showing a hunter standing under a
tree with his dog by his side blowing a horn while the reverse side exhibits a
pointing dog standing under a tree. The reverse ricasso is stamped with
the early Clemen & Jung trademark having the crown over the shield with the
letter Z in the center. However, the trademark is almost hidden under the
hilt leaving only one-third of the trademark visible. The buffer is green
felt felt displaying minor wear and age grading excellent. The black
leather scabbard shell is a real beauty having quality leather! The
leather shows fine preservation, grading near mint! What a shell!
There are virtually NO cuts, bruises or scrapes. There is one minor hit at
the lower, obverse scabbard fitting leaving a slight depression to the leather
and upper scabbard fitting edge. The upper and lower fittings are
perfectly matched being a brass base with a rich gilded finish, grading 100%!
They are the style that are NOT retained to the shell via small staples, but
instead, are retained by the pressed-on method of retention. Typical of
leather shells of the Imperial and Third Reich periods, it is decorated with
twin vertical lines on each side with the leather seam being on the reverse
side. The edges are scalloped with triple horizontal lines with the upper
fitting having the standard acorn lug. Finally, the skinner grip is
matching genuine stag with the lower reverse side displaying a chip. The
plates are retained by three flat head rivets with the upper one being covered
by a matching brass boss. The blade shows much wear and age mainly in the
form of scratches, smudging and edge sharpening. The reverse side is
stamped with initials S. H. S. contained in a saw-edged oblong circle. A
FINE hunting piece exhibiting beauty and condition! Excellent.
