E-552a  Subordinate Forestry Cutlass by Carl Eickhorn
This piece is the Carl Eickhorn Model “1189” “mit Hirschhornichalen” in the original Eickhorn Kundendienst.  The gilting to the hilt and scabbard fittings grades at least 95% with some minor thinning in a few areas.  The hilt is the “unadorned” style having a most impressive appearance being composed of a fine cast brass base metal with a matching gilt finish throughout!  The entire hilt shows very minor wear/age.  The “D” guard is also “unadorned” showing very minimal wear/age.  The quillion ends in a “deer hoof”.  The clamshell device has the “flared & curled left end” that rises upward exhibiting nominal age.  The ferrule is “line” decorated with “seven” lines that extend around the circumference of the ferrule.  The grip plates have a most attractive shade of “browns” with very appealing “knobs” throughout the surface.  The edges are toned, but NOT yet a golden color.  Each side of the grip plates is designed to house “three leafless acorns” with the reverse center acorn missing.  The remaining five acorns exhibit a 60-year old patina!  Love that look!  The magnificent triple engraved blade measures 13” in overall length.  The obverse side portrays “a kneeled rifleman aiming at a stag and doe running over a log in the forest”.  At the end of the etching is a perpendicular “game bird chirping”.  The reverse blade portrays the scene of a “hunter running toward a vicious wild boar who is engaged with a number of dogs being tossed in all directions”.  Finally, the spine has beautiful “laurel leafing”.  The background burnishing is dark and gorgeous!  There are two very minor hits to the blade edge that really DO NOT take away from the overall beauty of the blade.  Accordingly, the blade grades near mint!  The reverse ricasso is etched with the Eickhorn “1935-41 Squirrel” trademark.  The green felt washer is present.  The scabbard is “black” leather with a seam being sewn on the rear center with the front being adorned with two decorative lines.  It is in beautiful condition having a few tiny scrapes, grading near mint.  Nice!  The scabbard mounts are “unadorned” matching brass with a beautiful matching gilt finish.  They are retained by small reverse mounted staples with unreadable numbers underneath each staple.  They show minimal wear/age!   This piece is out of my personal collection.  Near mint.
