E-557 ULTRA RARE Short Deluxe
National Hunting Association Cutlass With Frog by Carl Eickhorn
I recently purchased this example from an old-time collector who was
doing some pruning! It is ULTRA RARE and 100% original and is the Eickhorn
Model # 1711 as listed in the original Eickhorn Kundendienst. The Cutlass
measures approximately 18” in length. The silver plating is MAGNIFICENT
grading 100%! The finish exhibits an unbelievable, matching dark patina
throughout. The pommel cap top has a flare-out detailed oak leafing that
stems from a centered acorn which acts as a tang nut. The lower side rim
of the cap exhibits raised-out overlapping oak leaves with beautiful veining
throughout the leaves. The grip is naturally genuine stag that was
expertly cut and curves to the left. It features a beautiful grain pattern
with a mixture of dark brown, reddish-brown and black colors with ivory
highlights to some areas. The fit to the ferrule and pommel cap is
stunning with NO signs of trimming anywhere. The center of the obverse
grip is decorated with the National Hunting Association insignia. The
insignia displays a silver stag head with a rayed swastika placed between the
antlers. On either side of the antler’s head are the initials of the
organization, DJ. The lower ferrule ring perfectly matches the look of the
pommel. The center ferrule is decorated with overlapping oak leaves with a
beaded ring above and below the leaf pattern. The crossguard features
quillons with detailed hooves making up each of the ends. In addition,
both hooves have hair simulated legs that stem out from the center block which
features beautifully detailed oak leaves. The crossguard arms are the up
and down variety. Below the guard is a choice clamshell. Below the
guard appears a gorgeous clamshell depicting a tweeting game bird resting on an
oakleaf branch. The backgrounding is the plain style. Beautiful
detail here! The blade is SPECTACULAR, being the triple engraved variety.
The obverse side is etched with a hunter kneeling with a rifle shooting at a doe
with a buck running off over a log. The reverse side has the hunter
running after his dogs which are pulling down a boar. The upper edge of
the spine is etched with oak leafing. The backgrounding remains in a very
dark state, grading 99%! The blade grades mint-! The reverse ricasso
is etched with the Eickhorn Squirrel 1935-41 trademark with the company location
located directly the squirrel, Solingen. The original green felt buffer is
intact, grading mint-. CAN’T be upgraded! The shell is a BEAUTY,
being the deluxe style. It is covered in green leather with a fine pebbled
graining. The leather seam appears to the left side and it is almost
undetectable! What workmanship! There is really NO carrying wear or
storage marks anywhere to be found. The matching scabbard fittings retain
their fine silver finish, grading mint. I don’t believe this piece was
every worn! Both fittings are retained to the shell via small staples.
The upper fitting is decorated with a detailed acorn lug while the remainder of
the fitting is unadorned. The lower fitting will take your breath away!
The obverse side contains a stag in a forest glen appearing to be baying for a
female. The stag is standing in the bushes with a tree branch hanging over
his head. The lower ball features a raised ring of beaded ball decorations
around the circumference while exhibiting NO carrying wear or age.
Attached to the upper mount is a beautiful green leather frog having a medium
brown colored reverse side. It is the V- notch style having a silver
colored “D” ring. NO collection should be without this model! A
RARE, museum-quality piece! Strong excellent.
