F-207a  WWII Luftwaffe “Wolchowstock” (Wooden Walking Stick)
This is intricately hand carved with many different designs. It has an approximate overall length of 36”. Tapering down from a large ball on top to a smaller rounded tip, this is finished in a dark brown hue. The tip has a brass cap nailed to it to protect the wood. This example features a large Luftwaffe eagle and swastika, along with an Iron Cross at the top. Below these are the words “wolchow”, “front”, “1943” and “Nowgorod”. Many of these were used and carved while soldiers were on the Eastern Front, and Nowgorod refers to Veliky Novgorod, which is a city in North West Russia. The central section of the stick is a combination of designs, from what looks like a brick wall to more of a checkerboard pattern. The upper part has a brown leather strap, which would have been used as a carrying aide.  This is definitely a work of art, offering a brief glimpse at one man’s story as a soldier during WWII!
