F-249 Cased WWI Military Binoculars, Re-painted
Sound pair of Imperial vintage binoculars in functioning condition - but the
short drums have been repainted a gloss black at some point in time, which in
turn has worn off a bit along the sides, leaving a bit of the shiny underlying
metal exposed near the larger end of each drum. The brass (toned a quite dark
reddish-brown color) ocular viewing rings appear to be the only means of
adjusting the focus, each needing to be individually rotated out or in to adjust
the focal length. There’s toning and a little trace of verdigris that
would clean up easily. The optics themselves are fine – quite clear, no
obvious scratches, chips or dirt in the viewing field. The binoculars come in a
black storage case with a rib textured, lightly glazed outer layer and gloss
black painted (some scrapes and wear) thin metal end caps on top and bottom. The
right (as viewed) of the two black leather belt loops is gone – only a small
section remains. The leather strap that functions as a hinge between the cover
lid and case bottom is rather dry, with the leather showing brick red where
cracking at each end along the stress line. The leather side tabs for latching
the lid shut (over metal pegs) are also dry (with some loss of the black outer
layer along the stress points), but intact, and with some leather care should do
fine.
