F-317 British Jerry Can Dated
1943 and Marked W ↑ D (War Department)
This is quite a bizarre thing, as this fuel can and the
German can offered below are, except for different colors and different
markings, otherwise the exact same thing. Even the design of the spout-securing
latch differs not a whit. The can has the marking “W ↑ D” in
large letters embossed into the metal on one side near the top, indicating the
item is the property of the (Royal) War Department; it is also dated “1943”.
These markings are embossed into the side of the can metal, with no sign of any
previous marking beneath, or the metal having been hammered out to form a new
surface for a re-mark over something else. Also, at the center of the can side
is the stamped marking “M.P.B.” (no idea what his stands for!). The can is
painted a pale tan color, the majority of which remains with light chipping and
wear to the edges. There is some light oxidation along the bottom. There is some
minor splitting along the underside rear crease in the handle, on each of the
two outer bars, which in no way reduces the stability of the bar. The center
carrying handle bar has no split. A fascinating example, and an intriguing set
together with its “Jerry”-made Jerry can cousin below!
