Seldom Encountered Red Cross Pennant (Two-Sided) with Wire Pennant Frame
This is a really rare piece! I bought it directly from the
Veteran’s son. It includes the pennant and the wire pennant frame (no longer
attached). The pennant itself is made of tin or aluminum and thus quite
lightweight; as the “charge” (emblem), it displays a black eagle clutching a
red cross on a white field, with a grey outer border and an inner grey
pinstripe. The eagle is in great condition, the field shows some soiling and
assorted scrapes and there is a patchy bit of loss to the border (top and
bottom) where it looks like something peeled off the upper layer of paint. The
reverse is in similar condition. At each hoist corner and at the pennant tip
there is an ancient rivet (oxidized exterior), with traces of a tab still
mounted to them; these would have been the tab mounts that attached the pennant
to the plated wire frame. The frame itself is in fair shape, though the original
celluloid cover (which would enclose the frame itself) is long gone. There
is some plating loss along the length of the frame and on these areas, the
underlying metal shows a little oxidation. In addition, the frame is slightly
curved. Overall a very neat item and extremely rare.
