FL-101a Two-Sided Red Cross Square Pennant, with Wire
Frame
Another incredibly rare piece which I purchased directly from the
Veteran’s son. This one is a large, square-form pennant measuring
10.75” by 10.75” made of lightweight tin (or aluminum) and screen printed
with a warm grey outer border, a white pinstripe, a narrow, warm grey
pinstripe, all enclosing a white field on which appears as the “charge”
(emblem) the black red cross eagle with white swastika on its breast, clutching
in its talons a red cross. The paint on this piece has a slightly streaky look
due to abrasive scuffing over time, but the eagle and the rest of the piece
still rates in very good overall condition on both sides, with only minor
soiling and a few faint brownish stains on one side. At each of the four hoist
corners there is an ancient rivet (oxidized), and each of these show traces of
the once present mounting tabs remaining (these would have held the pennant to
the frame wire, but would have been mostly out of sight under the leatherette
borders of the protective celluloid cover (long gone). The now separate
metal tubular wire frame has very little of the original finish remaining and
shows a fair amount of oxidation. A very hard to find pennant which will display quite
well!
