FL-106a Rare Grand Admirals Flag
Nice silk-screen printed Grand Admiral’s flag measuring
approximately 3.4’ by 3.4’ (great size!). It has some light soiling
(toward the corners) and some minor peppering (holes), but none big enough to
pose any real distraction. It is pretty clean and overall in great shape (hardly
any yellowing to the white field), with the printed colors in outstanding
condition – no sign of any fading. The flag is essentially square, large
enough to be quite impressive - yet not so big that it takes up too much space.
Flags like this were maintained on a vessel, but were only broken out and flown
when the Grand Admiral was aboard ship / visiting. It is made of a relatively
fine-woven bunting. The black Maltese cross reaches from edge to edge,
with crossed Grand Admiral batons superimposed over the cross. The batons are
printed in three separate and distinct colors. Stamped in black ink along the
hoist side top on the rear of the flag is a Navy Waffenamt eagle and M mark,
followed by the nomenclature (there was some variety in the terms, depending on
the maker) – in this case: Flg. Grossadmiral, and the size 1,5 X 1,5 – i.e.
the metric measurement in meters. At the top of the hoist there is a braided
rope loop, at the bottom a long lanyard in the same braided rope, for use in
attaching the colors to a halyard or flagpole. This is a rarely encountered
flag, in pretty nice condition for display in a collection.
