FL-110 Very Rare Grand Admirals Flag,
Approximately 3.4” by 3’.4”
An example out of the proverbial woodwork, this phenomenal
silk-screen printed Grand Admiral’s flag has some light soiling (toward the
corners) and some minor moth holes, but nothing that poses any real distraction.
The flag is an ideal size - just large enough to be very impressive, yet not
enough that it takes up too much space. This flag was maintained on a vessel,
but only flown when the grand admiral himself was aboard ship or visiting.
Made of medium-coarse bunting, it has the white field with a black Maltese
cross reaching from edge to edge; superimposed over the cross are crossed Grand
Admiral’s batons. The batons are printed in three separate and distinct
colors. A small, white label with pale blue machine-embroidered maker’s name
is sewn to the reinforced hoist on the front side of the flag, near the top. The
label reads: “Würtembergische Cattun Manufaktür, Heidenheim a. Brz.”.
Stamped in black ink along the hoist on the rear side of the flag is the
official nomenclature and size “Gr Adm Fl Gr 2” (Gr = Grösse
‘Size’) and the metric measurement: “100 X 100” in centimeters. At
the top and bottom of the hoist is a braided rope loop, for attaching the colors
to flagpole halyard clips. This is a rarely encountered flag, in a perfect
display size – ideal (and highly desirable) Navy Grand Admirals colors for any
collection.
