FL-110a Set of
Staff Car /Vehicle Flags for a Großadmiral (Likely Karl Dönitz)
The stuff dreams
are made of! This unique set of fender pennant and command flag is just like the
set captured with Großadmiral Dönitz’ staff car, shown on page 300 of the
book entitled Kriegsmarine Uniforms and
Traditions, Volume Three. There were only two individuals entitled
to use the Grand Admiral’s command flag – one being Raeder, the other, Dönitz.
The triangular fender pennant (used on the right front fender) is the regulation
type for an Admiral (the same pennant was used for all Admiral ranks), in dark
blue fabric with an embroidered national eagle in golden yellow thread. It has
black thread outlines and highlights. Each bird has a wingspan of just under
6”, and the embroidery lends them a noticeable relief above the surface of the
blue pennant cloth. In keeping with the regulation of 2 July 1941, the pennant
edges are decorated with a one inch wide gold bullion tress tape designed with
narrow, longitudinal ribs and evenly spaced, small mobile swastikas (1 by 1cm).
The bullion tress is nicely toned. One side of the pennant has a small hole
along the hoist edge, but except for this, the pennant is in excellent condition
(though no longer in any kind of casement). The Grand Admiral Command Flag
fender colors (used on the left front fender) was specific to the Großadmiral
rank, and thus only a very limited number were in use. This approximately
11.5” by 12” square flag is printed in exactly the same colors and design as
its much larger, free flying cousin. There is some peppering to the upper
“fly” end corner, and some light soiling, but nothing that poses any real
distraction. Made of woven white cotton bunting (moderately tight grain), it has
a black Maltese cross reaching from edge to edge, on which is superimposed a
pair of crossed Grand Admiral’s batons printed in three separate and distinct
colors. The flag has some moderate soiling in various spots and some mild
staining, but is complete and includes a metal pressure clip at each hoist end,
for attaching the flag to a fender post. These are in fine condition with nearly
all of their original plating intact. The flag has no celluloid casement any
more, but is a very impressive, rare item together with its paired Admiral’s
pennant. Really cool set.
