FL-3 Signals Flag, with Certification
Stamp; Approximately 23” by 23.5”
Neat Signals item, this flag is a red field in tightly woven red
cotton with a square hole cut out of the center, and white cotton square applied
over the hole, with the borders extending slightly onto the red on the reverse
side. The front side has a nice, white cube showing. One of our customers,
Bob K., helped us further identify this flag: "I looked up
your Maritime Signal Flag on the color chart in the back of my original
1939-printed German reference book "Schlag nach!", & your flag, in
the 1933 chart, stands for the letter "C" (listed as Cäsar").
There are two charts shown in color on the same page, the 1933 version at
the top is titled "Signalflaggen", & the chart below is
titled "Neues Internationales Signalsystem", which introduced many
changes in the flag designs. On the below chart, the "New
System", the signal flag for the letter "C" has been changed to a
white flag with a red horizontal center bar with two blue horizontal bars, one
at the top and one at the bottom edges. So your signal flag is the
earlier (therefore rarer) type." Thanks, Bob, for this information! There are red cloth tie
strings at the top and bottom corners of the hoist for attaching the flag in a
series or to a staff. There is a circular black certification stamp (with eagle)
over the bottom left front corner though the agency name is barely legible. Neat
item!
