Kaiserslautern Pennant
This pennant is attractive, but a bit salty.
The backside is bright red cloth with a separately applied white disk (bordered
in black) and sewn-on swastika. The colors are vibrant and the insignia looks
really sharp. There are scattered moth holes, none larger than an eraser head,
scattered about the surface. The edge of the pennant is wrapped in a gold
edging, with a geometric pattern woven within the material. The front side of
the pennant is composed of a large, light blue field that runs from the hoist to
just shy of the halfway point. From there, the remaining space to the pennant
point is divided into two equal widths of horizontal stripes. The top stripe is
pearly white, the bottom stripe the light blue color again. The blue field is
richly embroidered, with chain-stitched lettering in white thread at the top
reading: Bäcker+Fachklasse (Baker and Technical Class), and at the very bottom,
is the city “Kaiserslautern”. Between the upper and lower lettering is a
large crest-like image, comprised of rampant lions facing each other and holding
swords crossed between them (in the center). Entwined with and overlaying the
swords is a large Bretzel (pretzel), chain-stitched in gold colored thread;
above this a golden crown, and below the Bretzel, four loves of bread laid
end-to-end. The lion bodies were made using aluminum wire (vertical), with body
outlines and highlights chain-stitched in black thread. The aluminum wires used
for the lions are too long, however, and with no support (nothing to hold them
tight along their full length), many have loosened and/or shifted sideways in
places, or else the strands have broken at the top or bottom ends, exposing the
cream colored base material beneath. The thin blue cloth used for the field also
shows wear damage where the fibers are separating (mostly horizontal direction),
while the light blue cloth on the lower stripe property tag is also frayed, but
this time the strands run vertically. There is some fading to the blue, and
light soiling overall. Despite the age wear, this intriguing pennant is still
quite sound and has an impressive appearance!
