FL-6b Army Pionier Swallowtail
Standarte in Miniature
Known as a “Guide-on” in US Army parlance, the swallowtail flag
was originally most recognized as a two-color flag used by Cavalry Units (with
crossed sabers at the center, and a Troop number). In Germany, this form was
traditionally used by mobile / Motorized Units. This miniature example (for a
desktop flag set) is a handsome depiction of a swallowtail in the black
branch color (Waffenfarbe) of the German Pionier Troops (Engineers). The
insignia on the black (Pionier branch color) background is the same as on its
full-sized original cousin - but printed in ink (there is no embroidery work at
all). The detail is great despite the small size, with the eagle printed in
brown ink, the wreath in grey. Also like the full-size original, this miniature
swallowtail is two-sided (the swastika orientation is thus correct on either
side) and even has a little stiffer padding between the two outer layers. The
piece is in quite nice condition, with the black field nice and deep (no fading)
and the other two colors (medium brown and dark grey) also in great condition.
All sides except for the hoist have a silvery white celleon fringe. There is a
faint yellowish-green stain near the bottom hoist corner (mostly on the reverse
side), which gives the fringe a faintly green hue. This miniature doesn't have
the pole (this was usually a small, black painted dowel (which would be easy
enough to make; the flag was applied with tiny silver metal brad tacks, like
nails), nor is the original base present (but one could also be made). Overall a
spectacular little piece, and quite truly an original (if mini) swallowtail
Standarte!
