FL-92 Interesting Norwegian Banner with Flag and
Coat of Arms Shield
This piece measures approximately 33” by 42” and is something in
the line of a tapestry, with the design woven onto a slightly open mesh weave
base fabric. This weave pattern results in a series of visible, parallel
horizontal rib lines in the final design on the front side of the fabric. The
fabric was originally a dark forest green color, though there is some fading to
this and a small amount of soiling (especially to the reverse side), likely from
years of storage (even rubs off on your white T-shirt if you’re not careful!
– gentle open air tapping to dislodge any loose dirt might help!). There are a
few small pepper holes in the field and a small vertical tear repair near the
top edge. The heavily woven image shows a red shield crest on which is a lion
rampant in golden yellow holding an upright axe; the shield is topped by a miter
of some sort in gold thread, on top of which is little green dragon with a
raised axe; the shield is superimposed over two crossed, loosely draped
Norwegian flags. Below the shield is a small partial “V” wreath of acorns
and oak leaves. The top of the banner is doubled over to form a sleeve for a
horizontal suspension staff of some sort. Overall a very interesting
Norwegian piece.
