M-001   Extremely Scarce, Award Presentation Case (Shadow Box) with Original Awards!
The shadow box case is designed with an angle, so that when opened, the black velvet presentation tray is nicely presented toward the viewer. The interior satin lid lining is well padded, for protection. The case exterior is a two-color design  - it is basically a well-crafted wooden frame, covered with pebble textured grey skin, with a curving shaped, stiffened maroon cloth section over the lower right corner and halfway across the case. The case measures approximately 13.25” wide by 11.5” from front to back; the rear edge height is approximately 3”, while the sloped angle drops the front edge to just under 1.5”. There is some visible wear to the cloth covering along the lower right case edge - the wood is showing through – with a little less wear on some other high edge points – but nothing significant enough to really detract in any case! There are two swivel latches on the bottom case lip, with pegs on the lid edge. The interior is very impressive with nine different awards (medal bar counting as one – this having three awards of its own) and a ribbon bar (six ribbons). This set was probably for a retiring Luftwaffe Officer, since the top row is flanked by a pair of Artillery branch shoulder boards from a dress tunic, with the one on the right for a Major, the one on the left for a Lieutenant Colonel – he was likely promoted on departure from service.  The most significant awards here are: the centermost, which is a Bulgarian Order of Military Merit 1891, Knights 5th Class with crown, and war decoration (laurel leaf wreath); the two vaulted 1914 version Iron Cross First Class awards (one a pinback, the other with an unusual, cross-shaped backing plate, and screw nut), the rare screwback version First Class Spange; and the red enameled Gallipoli star (instituted in 1915) – in German, titled “der Eiserne Halbmond” (Iron Halfmoon) – referring to the Turkish crescent moon. All these awards are in outstanding condition – excellent enamel, and the semi-gloss core paint on the Iron Crosses is 100%. The bottom row includes a Czech Annexation Medal, an Army Four Year Faithful Service Medal, a 1914 Iron Cross Second Class Ribbon with an attached “1939” Second Class Spange (nice toning!) and a ribbon bar with devices, and a medal bar with a 1914 Iron Cross Second Class, a Hindenburg Cross with Swords, and a Bulgarian National Order of Merit Medal IV Class, Grade Two. All of these lower row medals / awards are also in superb condition; the ribbons are mounted using little silver pins, while the medals rest in depressions shaped specifically for each. An amazing set – just the shadow box, let alone the decorations as well!!
