Medal Grouping for 3.SS Artillery Regiment 54 “Nederland” Obersturmführer
Klemens Behlers
This grouping includes Behlers’ original wartime decorations,
three of his Veteran’s organization stick pins, a Veteran’s organization
magazine featuring his writings and photo, a grouping of photographs (reprinted)
and a certificate of authenticity from both Detlev Niemann and us, of course!
The medals include the following:
Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Ribbon - This is an excellent
example of an early war “A” type Steinhauer & Lück Cross, to include
all features of this firm’s manufacture, including correct inner frame
stamping and die flaw at the 9:00 to 12:00 arm. This frame on this example,
stamped on the reverse “800” for the silver content, has toned to a fairly
dark hue, giving it a very handsome look. The black core finish remains mostly
intact, with some finish loss to the swastika itself (noticeable on one of the
post-war photographs as well). The suspension ring is marked “800” as well.
It comes complete with a section of original ribbon which has strings on each
end for tying around the wearers’ neck. These ribbon characteristics can be
seen in one of the photos as well.
1939 Iron Cross 1st Class - This example shows moderate
wear to the core black paint, revealing the base metal used for the core, brass,
an interesting variation. The nickel/silver frame has toned to a nice dark hue.
The cross is slightly vaulted and has a wide, coke bottle shaped pin and a
rugged hinge. The wire catch has been reattached.
1939 Iron Cross 2nd Class with Ribbon - A great example,
retaining all of its black core paint. The frame has toned slightly. The
suspension ring is maker marked “65” for Klein & Quenzer of Idar
Oberstein. A section of ribbon is included.
War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords and Ribbon - Clean
and wear-free, with all bronze finish remaining intact. The suspension ring is
maker marked “67” for H. Kreisel of Gablonz. A section of ribbon is
included.
Wound Badge in Silver 1939 - This example is produced in zinc and
has lost all of its original silver finish, except for what is on the pin. There
is little to no wear visible, showing good detail. The reverse is maker marked
“127” for Moritzhaus AG of Pforzheim.
Wound Badge in Black 1939 - This example retains nearly all of its
original black finish. The base metal of the pin, tombak, is seen where some of
the finish is missing. The badge is maker marked “107” for Karl Wild,
Salzburg.
Hitler Youth Proficiency Badge in Bronze - This example retains most
of its original bronze finish. It shows minor toning to the finish and little to
no wear to the details. The reverse has the serial number “5363”. The pin is
securely in place and functions as it should.
Three Post-War Civilian Stick Pins - One bears the motto of the “LAH”,
one has the Divisional sign of the 4.SS Polizei Division and the other bears the
motto of his Waffen-SS Veteran’s Organization, Kameradenwerk Steiner e. V.
Also included are a group of photos of Behlers, from wartime up through later in
life. Also included is a biography which tells his whole story.
A high quality grouping that would be hard to upgrade!
