M-003  Cased Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, Steinhauer & Lück A Type “Micro 800”, with Authentication by Dietrich Maerz
The Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross was instituted on September 1, 1939 and was the highest award given to German soldiers during the second World War. Steinhauer and Lück of Ludenscheid, one of seven manufacturers of this award, was one of the largest. The frame is stunning, with the slightest amount of toning, with the frosting remaining 90% + intact. The core paint is 100% intact with light fading on the edges, and the core is magnetic. This cross is textbook “A” type, with all of the characteristics known that identify it as such. The main identifier is the flaw group in the 9 and 12 o’clock knee area of the beading. The second identifier is present as well, the small flaw in the vertical beading of the 3 o’clock arm. The core follows all S & L characteristics as well, with the numerals and swastika being the type expected on these. The inner beading tips are also textbook on these crosses. The reverse is stamped with the silver content “800” in small numerals, giving it the nickname “micro 800”. The obverse of the cross has a slight amount of damage to four beading hills in the area of the ingoing lower 3 o’clock arm, by coincidence in the area where a genuine “B” type cross would have the so called “dent row”. If this indeed had been a dent row it would have been present on both the obverse and the reverse, as both frames are identical stamping parts. The inner ring for the ribbon loop is textbook S & L, with its unfinished rough surface, while the suspension ring itself has beautifully finished tips. This also includes an original case, which is finished in a pebbled black leatherette. There is moderate wear, mostly to the edges, but the case exterior is overall sound+. The interior features a white satin lining on the upper lid and a compartmented lower section finished in black velvet. This also has a compartment for the included full-length ribbon. A near excellent, textbook in every way example! Complete with the authentication letter by Dietrich Maerz.
