M-003a Early Production Knight’s Cross of
the Iron Cross, Super Scarce with Suspension Ring Stamped “L/12 800” by C.
E. Juncker with Ribbon
The Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross was instituted on September 1,
1939 and was the highest award given to German soldiers during the second World
War. C. E. Juncker of Berlin, one of seven manufacturers of this award, was
known as one that produced awards of exceptional quality. The silver frame on
this particular example is excellent, with just the slightest amount of toning
to the obverse. It is unmarked. The smoothly applied, glossy (early production)
core paint is better than 95% intact with light fading on the edges, and the
core is magnetic. This cross is textbook Juncker production in all respects! The
beading follows all of the correct characteristics, with the numerals and
swastika being the type expected on these. The ring for the ribbon loop is
textbook Juncker, with its “support base” giving the lower part a very broad
appearance. The suspension ring itself has beautifully finished tips and is
stamped with the LDO designation and the silver content, “L/12 800”, making
this a very scarce example. This is complete with its neck ribbon which is
intact but shorter than issue length. This is because the owner opted to shorten
the ribbon and add an elastic device to ease putting it on and taking it off.
Each end has a clip for fastening. This is a simply gorgeous piece, and is sure
to please!
