M-004a Rare “Ehrenblatt des
Deutschen Heeres” Army Honor Roll Clasp
Acts of heroism by Army soldiers were entered in the “Honor Roll of
the German Army“ from July 1941 onward, though no physical award actually
existed at that time (the level was considered higher than that for the Iron
Cross First Class, however). In January of 1944, Hitler instituted the “Honor
Roll Clasp of the Army” as an actual, presentable award, and these are
arguably among the rarest of the three types of clasp (Luftwaffe, Navy, Army).
This particular example is in excellent condition, with only the faintest toning
to the majority of the fine gilt finish, though very dark where the tips of the
static swastika actually meet the inner sides of the surrounding wreath ring.
The design, in fact, is very reminiscent of the wreath and swastika portion of
the Deutschland Erwache standard finial. The wreath is mounted securely to an
Iron Cross Second Class ribbon (slightly shorter than the normal length) by four
wire prongs. This clasp is a textbook Klein-made piece, and other than some very
slight soiling to the ribbon, is near flawless. A very rarely encountered award,
no matter how you slice it, in fine condition!
