M-006 Hand Embroidered Officer’s Bullion Cloth Pilot’s
Badge (Flugzeugführer=Abzeichen)
This is a magnificent, used example of the cloth version of the dashingly
designed pilot’s badge, awarded to airmen who had received and held their
military pilot’s license for at least a year (a pilot could still fly
military aircraft with only a Civilian pilot’s license, but he did not receive
the badge until he qualified for the military license). This award uses the same
design pattern as the metal version (oval wreath with spread winged eagle
clutching a swastika), but everything is embroidered – in this case using
aluminum bullion for an Officer grade badge, a distinction that didn’t exist
with the metal badge. This example is rather unique, since the base material is,
in fact, a dark blue Trikot-like fabric (i.e. a ribbed material). The heavy
bullion work gives the piece some really good relief. There is some light
fraying to the outer edge of the badge, since it was once affixed to a tunic.
The reverse still retains the majority of the black protective backing paper. A
very impressive, rarely encountered badge!
