M-008a  Rare Kriegsmarine (Navy) First Type “Schnellboot-Kriegsabzeichen (E-Boat Badge); French Maker!  Worn
This first type E-Boat badge is a unique piece, since French-made badges are relatively uncommon, and this badge has all the signs of French manufacture. It is in worn condition, with zinc as the base metal – as a result, nearly all the gold and silver finish is gone, with only some silver finish remaining on the stern of the E-Boat to indicate the color this once had. The rest of the badge is the matte dark zinc grey. The detail is good, with the eagle’s form in the somewhat stylized, simplified style common among French manufacturers.  The badge reverse is also zinc grey, with the metal surface having the slightly “unfinished” look also common to French-made badges. The small loop hook at the top of the reverse is present - this prevented the badge from leaning forward (or falling sideways around the center axis) when worn on a uniform. The badge has the usual horizontal style pin and catch arrangement, with a slim, flat-bodied silver pin that flares at the waist before tapering in to a point. The hinge design is the most telltale indicator of origin, since the pattern of two standing panels (rounded exteriors) with the pin mounted between them, is most common of French constructions. Worn, but very intriguing example!
