M-010 Submarine Combat Clasp (U-Boots-Frontspange)
in Silver
The Navy was the last of the services to have a combat clasp when
under the direction of Grand Admiral Dönitz the Submarine Combat Clasp was
instituted. The award was determined by the recommendation of the U-Boat
commander based on the number of sorties his crew undertook against the enemy,
risk relative to the number of sorties or demonstrated personal bravery. Dönitz
personally approved the award of each of these. The award in silver was
introduced on November 24, 1944 when it became evident that a higher class was
needed to recognize the great risks taken by U-Boat crews. The central motif is
based on a modified version of the Submarine badge, with the addition of crossed
swords at the base of the wreath and three rows of oak leaves on either side of
the badge. The silver finish is approximately 85% intact, a scarcity on these
zinc based badges! The obverse displays some moderate wear to the metal, but the
details are all visible. The silver finish on the reverse is almost completely
missing, with about 25% of it intact. The horizontally mounted pin is hinged
from the left of the award. The reverse is stamped in high relief with the
designers information, “Entwurf Peekhaus” and the manufacturers information,
“Ausf. Schwerin Berlin 68”. A sound example overall!
