M-011 Submarine Combat Clasp (U-Boots-Frontspange)
in Bronze
The Navy was the last of the services to have a combat clasp.
When under the direction of Grand Admiral Dönitz, the Submarine Combat Clasp
was instituted. The award was determined by the recommendation of the U-Boat
Commander, based on the number of sorties his crew undertook against the enemy,
risk relative to the number of sorties or demonstrated personal bravery. Dönitz
personally approved the award of each of these. The award was initially only
offered in bronze such as this example. It was introduced on May 15, 1944. The
central motif is based on a modified version of the submarine badge, with the
addition of crossed swords at the base of the wreath and three rows of oak
leaves on either side of the badge. The bronze finish is a solid 90% intact, a
scarcity on these zinc based badges! There is virtually no wear to the details,
this is very crisp. The bronze finish on the reverse remains a solid 90% intact
as well. The horizontally mounted pin is hinged from the left of the award. The
reverse is stamped in high relief with the designer’s information, “Entwurf
Peekhaus” and the manufacturer's information, “Ausf. Schwerin Berlin
68”. A near excellent example overall!
