M-012    Kriegsmarine (Navy) Second Type “Schnellboot-Kriegsabzeichen (E-Boat Badge); Made by Adolf Schulze; Super Example!
The Germans called this type of vessel an “S-Boot” from “Schnellboot” (fast boat). The badge was manufactured in two distinct patterns, the first seeing use from 30 May 1941 until January 1943. Both were designed by the respected firm of Wilhelm Peekhaus of Berlin. This example is a textbook piece with the gilt finish on the fairly broad and relatively flat relief oak leaf wreath showing some moderate toning for an overall dusky hue. The badge has a definite weight to it. The swastika is solid (not cutout), the eagle has relatively simplified wing feathers. The E-Boat itself (this was the British designation for this craft) has the slightly longer bow characteristic of the second pattern badge. The hull has a nickel/silver finish, though the hull bottom (keel) is a copper color. The waves curling away from the front of the E-Boot bow are very dark colored (almost black). The reverse retains nearly 100% of its extremely dark silver oxide (practically black) finish. The badge has the small loop hook at the top of the reverse, which prevented the top of the badge from tipping forward away from the pocket. It has the horizontal pin style with a slim, flat-topped pin that flares nicely at the waist (center) before tapering to a point. The pin fits securely within the catch. The bottom section of the badge reverse is maker marked with the distinctive triangle bearing the letters “AS”, which identified the maker “Adolf Schulze”. A real spectacular example of an extremely rare Navy badge!
