M-014 Numbered (50 Engagements) Sturmabzeichen
[General Assault Badge], by Rudolf Karnath – Nice Condition
A truly fine example of the numbered (50 engagement) badge. The
thickness of the eagle, crossed bayonet and hand grenade above the wreath
surface give the badge a subtly convex look. The silver finish to the wreath is
handsomely aged, with light toned and with a burnished look with shadows in the
low relief points. The bird, bayonet and grenade are a nicely contrasted, dark
oxidized silver color. Some traces of the grey underlying zinc show through on
the swastika (light pitting). The number box at the center of the wreath is also
dark silver/grey; no gilting remains on the border or on the “50”. The
one-piece eagle and weapons is affixed to the wreath frame with high-standing
rivets through the reverse. Interestingly enough, the lower right rivet of the
normal four seems to be missing – there is no sign that the rivet peg was ever
present. The reverse center of the right side of the wreath is marked with the
circled “RK” for the Gablonz-based maker “Robert Karnath”. The hinge is
very well-machined, and the badge has a very nice, solid, flat pin with a flared
waist, and a subtly downward-bowed shape; it sits securely in a well-crafted,
flatwire catch. A truly spectacular example of one of the most desirable badges.
