M-015 Spanienkreuz in Bronze ohne Schwertern
(Spanish Cross in Bronze, without Swords), Marked L/13
In 1939, the Spanish Cross award became available to Germans who had
taken part in the Spanish Civil War supporting Generalissimo Franco’s fight
against Spanish communist forces. The decoration was presented in two classes:
“with swords” for combatant personnel, and “without swords” for
non-combatants - and in several grades within each class, including bronze and
silver. This award is the lower of the two for a non-combatant (with Swords) –
i.e. the Spanienkreuz in Bronze ohne Schwertern (Spanish Cross in Bronze without
Swords). This decoration is a fine example with a very convex shape (it rests on
its cross points when laid on a table), in a very copper heavy Tombak alloy that
serves as the bronze finish – the piece has a very ruddy look, with some
darker toning here and there. The reverse is deeply stamped at the center with
the LDO maker code “L/13” (Paul Meybauer). The hinge is finely crafted and
functions smoothly. There is some very light verdigris along the badge edges,
but nothing that detracts. A couple of the pointed cross corners are slightly
snubbed (curled). The pin is a very well made, Coke-bottle type piece with the
waist flared waist at the center point, the pin then tapering to a tip. A very
representative example.
