M-018 “25” General Assault Badge (Allgemeines
Sturmabzeichen)
The regular General Assault Badge was instituted on June 1, 1940 and
was intended for award to personnel who supported an attack but were not
eligible for Infantry or Armored Assault Badges. It was awarded to members of
the Artillery, Engineers, Anti-Tank and Anti-Aircraft Units that served the
Infantry or Armor in an auxiliary role in the conduct of the assault. Medical
personnel were also eligible if they cared for wounded under close combat
conditions. As the war progressed, and the number of combat days a soldier faced
increased, and three higher grades to the General Assault Badge were approved on
June 22, 1943 to acknowledge this. This example is a Grade II for 25 days in
combat (grades III and IV were for 50 and 75 days, respectively). The silver
finished (99% intact) wreath is produced in a white metal, while the separate
(and larger) grey finished eagle, crossed grenade and bayonet are produced in
zinc. There is a separate box at the bottom which has the number “25” for
the grade; this has a bronze finish which is mostly intact. The smoothly
finished (no stippling) reverse displays all of the characteristics you would
expect to see on a badge manufactured by JFS (Josef Feix & Sohne), as this
particular one is. These include the prominent domed rivets, the hinge setup for
the pin, the flat wire catch and the coke bottle shaped pin. The silver finish
to the reverse is 100% intact! This one would be nearly impossible to upgrade,
excellent overall!
