M-021 German Cross in Gold by Otto Klein
This is one of the more scarce makers of this desirable badge! It is
a light (cupal) example. From the front, it looks exactly like a
Zimmermann-produced badge, and for good reason; Klein used Zimmerman sourced
parts, therefore this badge has all of the die flaws you would see on a cross
produced by them. These include the flaw on the ray (around 11:00) and the
distinct, rectangular flaw of the “9” in the date. The ray assembly is in
fantastic condition, as is the wreath. The enamel on the (slightly loose)
swastika has a few small dings and the white backing plate has discolored a bit.
From the rear, it is obvious that this is not a Zimmermann cross, as they are
distinctly different. This cross has four hollow rivets at 12, 3, 6 and 9:00
that are countersunk into the reverse. The catch is of a round wire, with just a
small amount attached to the rectangular (with rounded edges) base plate. The
hinge is a one-piece sheet metal example, which is attached to a plate, just
like the one for the catch. The pin slowly tapers down to a point. The Präsidialkanzlei
number for Otto Klein, 134, is stamped in incuse relief onto the center of the
reverse of the badge. A near excellent example from a scarcely-seen maker!
