M-030 Second Class Olympic Medal with Original
Presentation Box
Instituted in 1936 as a special award to reward efforts made that
contributed to organizing the 11th Olympiad in Berlin, there were two senior
classes of decoration – the First Class and the Second Class. This fine
looking example of the Second Class award is made from gilt metal and snow white
enamel. Topped by a straight-winged white eagle with gilt highlights, is a
five-armed, white enamel-filled starburst with gleaming gilt edges (borders).
This white starburst is superimposed over a five-armed, ribbed gilt starburst.
Horizontally across the center of the award, appear the five Olympic rings
raised above the surface, filled with white enamel and with gilt border piping.
The vertical top center gold ray joins with the wreath swastika, topped by a
National eagle. The medal comes with the original suspension ribbon. Other
than a few age cracks in the enamel (on the lowest and bottom right arms), the
medal is in nice condition. This all comes with a white leatherette presentation
case. The exterior is moderately discolored, with the five Olympic rings in gilt
on the top lid. This section has a narrow gilt line running around the edge. The
interior has a grey satin liner on the top, and a (slightly discolored) grey
felt liner, on which the medal sits. Except for the above listed minor
liabilities, the case is sound. A very nice piece!
