M-033
Navy “Kriegsabzeichen für Hilfskreuzer” (Auxiliary Cruiser War Badge)
This is an unmarked, single rivet example, with a handsome,
pale gilt wash at 99.9% on the obverse of oak leaf wreath and Viking ship. The
ocean on the silver/grey metal globe is toned a darker grey than the European
continent. The globe is attached to the badge frame in the textbook pattern
using a single rivet through to the back (with the rivet head just a bit above
the catch). There is a small crack running along the outer edge, following the
outer contour portion of the top of one of the oak leaves as it clears the globe
on the left side (as viewed). The crack is not visible from the front view,
however. The reverse is gilt with the same wash as used on the front, with some
slight ruddy spots. The nickel/silver colored pin has a slim neck (this has a
slight off-center bend) with a nicely flared waist that then tapers to a point.
The pin remains secure in the catch. Nice unmarked example of this scarce badge.
