M-198  Cased Spange 1939 to the WWI Iron Cross 1st Class
A spectacular piece, this spange has 100% the matte frosted silver finish on the obverse, which contrasts nicely with the gleaming highlights of the polished smooth surfaces  (e.g. swastika, box frame, and the numerals). The First Class spange was awarded to a WWI winner (of the Imperial version of the Iron Cross Second Class) for a subsequent award of the Iron Cross First Class during WWII (i.e. post-1939), and was worn above the Imperial EK I (Iron Cross) on the left breast pocket. This matte silver finish on the reverse of this spange is complete as well. The hinge is nicely machined, with very little lateral movement allowed the pin, which remains securely within its catch. The spange comes in a small, square, black leatherette covered presentation case which has the award image nicely embossed in silver on the lid. The case is in excellent condition with only one tiny nick to the rear bottom edge, and to the top lower left corner. The lid is opened by a horizontal catch release bar (sticks slightly). The lid interior is lined in off white silk, the lower half of the case is faced in black flocking - which offers a super contrast against the silver award. Extremely nice cased EK I Spange!
