(Pilot’s Badge), Unmarked
Active military personnel who qualified for and received a military pilot’s
license were awarded the Pilot’s Badge (not authorized without the military
license – the man could fly with a civilian license, but did not receive the
badge). This example, in zinc, shows good detail with just slight wear to the
highlights. The finish remains 60% intact, having darkened over the years. The
unmarked reverse of the badge is very dark, with traces of the original silver
finish seen around the hardware. The hinge is a sheet metal example, and the
needle pin is slightly bent but functions as it was intended. The flat wire
metal catch is soldered directly onto the back of the badge. The eagle remains
tightly affixed to the wreath by a pair of fairly flat rivets. A sound example
overall!
