M-270c Luftwaffe Cloth
“Fliegerschützenabzeichen für Bordfunker” (Radio Operator /Air Gunner’s
Badge)
This badge was first instituted (the metal version, that is)
in March of 1936 and was awarded to air gunners, radio operators and mechanics
who successfully completed two months of training or who had participated in one
of these crew positions during five operational flights. This fine example is in
cloth thread, for Other Ranks (Officers were authorized to wear a
hand-embroidered bullion version). The half laurel-leaf, half oak-leaf wreath
with swastika is machine-embroidered in a silver grey thread on a medium
fliegerblau (grey/blue) felt backing, while the eagle and lightning bolts are in
pewter grey thread. The swastika was positioned at the bottom of the wreath
itself. Except for two small, faint rusty orange spots (left side as viewed –
on the edge of the wing, and the inner edge of the wreath) which do not really
detract, the badge is in very good condition. A desirable badge!
