Vessels)
Later-war zinc version depicting a wreath and National emblem around
an exploding water funnel. This was intended for Officers and men of the ships
for which the badge was named. In order to qualify for the badge, it was
necessary to have participated in at least three operational sorties. The badge
could be awarded on a first sortie basis, should the man be wounded during the
course of action, if the ship was sunk in action, or if the sortie was
successful. There is virtually no wear to the highlights of this example. The
original fire gilt finish on the wreath and National eagle remains 90% intact.
The finish of the central motif is nearly completely missing, as is common with
the zinc badges. The reverse features a horizontally mounted coke bottle
shaped pin on a sturdy barrel hinge. There is a wire catch attached directly to
the badge. There is a stabilizing catch at the top of the badge as well. A sound, representative example of this badge!
