M-283a Navy “Kriegsabzeichen für Hilfskreuzer”
("Auxiliary Cruiser War Badge")
Unmarked example of a late-war strike in zinc, with a single rivet (well
flattened) securing the globe and Viking long ship in place. This unique badge
was instituted on 24 April 1941 by order of Grand Admiral Erich Raeder, with the
design by Ernst Peekhaus. This example has very nice detail and though the
original gilt finish is entirely gone from the eagle, wreath and the long ship,
the zinc metal shows no sign of any deterioration and holds a consistently matte
grey finish (no oxidation). The nickel/silver finish on the globe remains intact
and handsome, complete with darkly burnished borders around the edges of the
continents. The reverse is in very good condition, though also with no finish
remaining. The flat surfaced pin is a high quality brass alloy, with a long
(slightly stretched), thin neck and wasp waist that then flairs gently only as
it nears the catch (rather than at the center point). Quite handsome
overall!
