M-285b Kriegsmarine (Navy) First Pattern
“Schnellboot-Kriegsabzeichen (E-Boat Badge)
This exclusive badge was given for meritorious service above the
infamous “S” boats that saw service from the English Channel to the
Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, the qualifications were 1) twelve sorties
against enemy vessels or installations; 2) an uncommonly successful mission; 3)
being wounded while engaged with the enemy; 4) displaying outstanding leadership
in the face of the enemy. Produced in zinc and displaying the characteristics
used by many Navy badges, it features an oak leaf wreath with a Navy eagle at
the top, all finished in gilt. Amazingly, the finish remains 95% + intact! The
central motif features an “S” boat racing through the water, crashing
through a wave. This is finished in grey with the finish remaining a solid 80%
intact. The scalloped reverse on this die cast badge has a sheet metal hinge and
a needle type, round attachment pin. The round wire catch is soldered to a
rectangular base, then attached to the badge. The finish is mostly missing from
the reverse. A near excellent example of a scarcely-encountered badge!
