M-290a General Assault Badge (AllgemeinesSturmabzeichen)
Grade One (Solid Version)
This badge was instituted on June 1, 1940 and was intended for award
to personnel who supported an attack but were not eligible for Infantry or
Armored Assault Badges. It was awarded to members of the Artillery, Engineers,
Anti-Tank and Anti-Aircraft Units that served the Infantry or Armor in an
auxiliary role in the conduct of the assault. Medical personnel were also
eligible if they cared for wounded under close combat conditions. This is a
later-war solid example, die forged in zinc with a subdued silver
finish that remains approximately 50% intact. The details are crisp with
only minor wear. The reverse features a narrow needle pin. The hinge is a ball
style that has been soldered onto the reverse of the badge. The clasp
consists of a round wire that is crimped to a round base, which has also been
soldered onto the back of the badge. The reverse is maker marked “L/12”
indicating production by C.E. Juncker and that it was a private purchase
example. Above average condition overall!
