M-295b Bronze Panzer Assault Badge (Panzerkampfabzeichen)
by Frank & Reif
The Panzer Assault (or Tank Battle) Badge was designed by Ernst Peekhaus of
Berlin and instituted for use on December 20, 1939. It was awarded to personnel
who participated as Tank Commanders, Gunners, Drivers or Radio Operators in at
least three different armored assaults on three different days. This is the
solid zinc version and is missing all of its bronze finish. There is just minor
visible wear to the highlights. The reverse features a sheet metal hinge and a
round needle pin. The round wire “C” shaped catch is soldered directly onto
the back of the badge. The reverse is scooped out on this die forged badge, and
the maker’s name is seen in high relief. It says “Frank & Reif
Stuttgart”. This has every characteristic of this type of Frank & Reif
badge, including the die flaw in the oak leaf at the 11:00 position. A sound
example of this type!
