M-333b Medal for the Italo-German Campaign in
North Africa
This award was designed by the Italian designer De Marchis and was
issued by the Italian government to Germans (not Italians) to honor their
military deeds while serving with Rommel’s Afrika Korps. Not an official
German award, it was considered a foreign decoration and therefore authorized
for wear. There is much symbolism featured with this award. Starting with the
obverse, which features two gladiators (the German and the Italian forces)
battling a crocodile (the British forces). Below the crocodile is where the name
of the designer is seen. The reverse depicts the Italian Feleni Arch with a
fasces on the left and a swastika on the right. Below the arch is the Royal Knot
of the House of Savoy. Around the outer rim is the script “Italo-German
Campaign in Africa” in both languages. This later-war zinc example is missing
all of its finish. The medal is suspended by a green/white/red/white/black
ribbon. There is no pin. A sound example of an interesting medal!
