S-071  Special Reichsmarschall’s Presentation Frame
For a very similar example to this one, see Volume II of LTC (Ret.) Thomas Johnson’s book entitled WWII German War Booty. This particular piece was taken out of Göring’s “treasure cave” in 1945. The handsome silver frame measures about 11.5” (292mm) wide by about 14” (357mm) high, with the smooth, flat front frame panels about 1” (254mm) wide. The frame has taken on a fine looking, uneven patina across its surface, giving it a wonderfully well-aged appearance. Mounted at the center of the top front panel of the frame is a handsome, gilt eagle (very slightly loose), which contrasts beautifully against the dark silver frame. The eagle’s wingspan measures about 3.25” (86mm) wide. This handsome bird bears a pair of crossed fieldmarshal’s batons, superimposed with a swastika.  This was the insignia unique to Goring’s position as Reichmarshall. The frame holds a white paper matte backing and an excellent reprint photo of unserer lieben Reichsmarschall Hermann (our dear Reichs Marshal) in full uniform, decked out with Grand Cross and all his other awards great and small as well as his Marshal’s baton. The picture itself measures about 6.5” (165mm) wide, and about 9” (225mm) high.  The left side edge of the silver frame (as viewed from the front) is maker marked “ZEITNER BERLIN” and notes the silver content of “835” (stamped within a circle) and within another circle, the Zeitner company’s distinctive “Z” logo. The backing is a thin sheet of wood on this piece and is set up for a tabletop or bookcase-top display, having a wooden stand mounted on the back. The stand has a small, plated hinge along its top edge, which is secured to the back panel and to the stand by three round-headed rivets. The wooden stand, which is narrow at the top and widens at the bottom to provide a more stable support, is also pre-curved at the bottom, which gives it a little shock absorbency. The paper lining the inner side of the stand (facing the back of the frame) has split a bit and the paper has peeled off the bottom inch or so of the wood, leaving it bare – but everything else still remains intact. This is a spectacular piece and would be a centerpiece of any collection.  With only three of these Reichsmarschall Göring portrait presentation frames known for certain to be still in existence, you have a rare opportunity to obtain an very valuable, choice collectible that is both an excellent investment item and at the same time a magnificent display piece!
