Bearer’s Flag Bandoleer (Carrier)….Scarce Accessory!
This wide strap is curved to hang around the neck with the ends
overlapped at about waist level; at this point a heavy leather cup is mounted
over the overlap point. The cup takes the butt of a flag or standard pole and
holds it securely while the individual is marching. The quality is impressive,
with the entire strap face covered with brown velvet and gold tress bands (the
tress having darkened to a nice patina nearly the same shade as the velvet); the
entire strap edge is wrapped in pale blue colored leather (for Orts Level).
There is some abrasion scuffing to the blue edges since the leather is a bit
dry, but this does not detract from the piece when displayed. The leather cup
for the staff butt is in excellent condition, the leather appears quite sound
and the stitching tight; the long leather adjustment belt and buckle on the
underside of the strap (right side) is also very good, and beautifully marked:
“Kreisleitung München der NSDAP” inside a rectangular box, with an official
circular seal stamped to the left of the box. The underside of the bandoleer
shows some flaking to the upper surface layer, but this is not readily visible.
The buckle on the adjustment strap is gilt finished – though much of this has
faded over time. The leather-securing loop is a tad dry with some stress lines,
and could use some treatment with “Horseman’s One-Step” or other quality
leather care product. All in all, a very desirable accessory.
