S-090   Rare, Presentation DLV Vase
This amazing item (a vase or a loving cup) stands about 13.75” high from the base to the top of the lid – but including the ball on the top, the total height reaches about 14.75”. The diameter across the mouth is about 4.25”. The entire vase (or cup) appears to be made from a thin sheet of brass, plated with silver or nickel/silver. There is heavy toning to the finish, with the patina quite intense in various areas. There is one patch spot on the front left to the side of the insignia, where the brass seems to be showing. The insignia itself is in fact a spectacular, enameled DLV cap device, from which the prongs were removed and the device then affixed to the side of the vase. It is the early, very high quality form with red enameled outer ring and a nickel silver finish. The insignia is arched and fits perfectly along the side of the vase and consists of a red circle (ring) superimposed with a pair of horizontal wings (Luftwaffe style), each with three horizontal feathers. The bottom half of each length of feather has a series of angled grooves along its length. At the center, superimposed over the wings and a vertical two-bladed propeller, is a black-enameled mobile swastika. The enamel is in very nice condition. The nickel silver has taken on a fine patina, giving the insignia a very handsome, antique appearance. Engraved on the vase above it is the inscription: “St. Nikolai Schutzengilde (the shooting guild) 1583-1933” and below this: “Ehrenpreis der Fl. Nachrichten”("Honor prize for Flight Signals"). A very nice piece (that even a spouse will approve of), great for display.
