S-128 Pre-WWI Stein for a
Reserve Artilleryman
Fine piece, with the bell-shaped metal lid depicting various
scenes, and with a soldier in Pickelhaube (spiked helmet) sitting atop the cover
dome, hand held out. A motto around the bottom rim of the cover reads:
“Brother clink glasses together – the Reservist lives!” (this rhymes when
translated back to German). The painted area fills in the space between the
Stein’s molded-in upper and lower ridges. The artwork is very nice, with an
almost watercolor-like look to it in some parts, though the martial marching and
bivouac scenes are in denser colors. This soldier served in the 6th Company, of
the 5th Baden Infantry Regiment 113, stationed at “Freiburg i. Br.” between
1905 and 1906; slogans painted on the Stein profess his pride in “the 5th”!
On each side of the handle, the Stein has vertical, printed lists of the Unit
member’s names (in case the Stein owner - too deep in his cups, perhaps - were
to forget a comrade’s name). All he need do was check the lists – assuming
he could still read them, by that point!). The cover tips back nicely (the thumb
rest is a crowned griffen, with a shield) and there is even some gleam to the
high relief on the lid’s pewter metal.
