S-261 Boxed Political Leader’s Gorget – Very Fine
This gorget is a rare example, complete with the finely pebbled black
leatherette covered box. The Political Leader’s gorget itself is fine, with
its best asset - the incredibly impressive, 3 or 4 mm thick eagle with dark
bronze, deeply burnished finish. The lighter bronze of the gorget surface
showing slight soiling, and just a bit of variance in the tone of the bronze in
various places. The gorget has the usual dark green wool facing on the reverse
backing (looks absolutely un-used), with two small flat clips for attaching the
chain. The top surface of the left side hook is stamped with a RZM mark and the
makers code “M1/128”. The chain is made up of 31 bronze colored rectangular
links, which have alternating eagle / oak leaf and swastika motifs. The reverse
of one of the base link with attachment bar is RZM marked and bears the exact
same maker’s code as on the gorget: “M1/128“. The original box has a plain
cardboard interior and a black leatherette exterior. The cover of the box was
split at every seam so we decided to undertake repairs, and have been able to
restore it to very nearly its original form, and to the original fit, by careful
re-setting and taping of the interior. There is a partial split down from the
top on the pointed front seam of the lower box section, but this should not
increase given careful handling, and otherwise the box is very nice, complete
with the original brown tissue paper. An extremely fine, boxed
Political Leader’s gorget is hard to beat.
