HG-1 Army Other Ranks (EM/NCO) “Extramütze”
(Private Purchase Visor Cap) with Panzer Piping; Maker Marked
Made of good quality medium field grey Trikot wool with a regulation
(round) top panel, and an overall teller shape. The material on this cap is in
pretty nice condition, with only minor tracking to the top panel and a single
pencil point-sized hole under the right overhang. The cap is regulation piped
(no piping diameter exceeds 0.2mm) in the light pink (Rosa) Waffenfarbe (branch
color) of the Panzer branch. I didn't detect any nips – the piping looks
damage-free! The cap has a very nice metal eagle and wreath, with the bird
lightly soiled, but probably aluminum, and the wreath definitely a matte
finished aluminum. The Other Ranks chinstrap is in good condition with some
vertical crazing and a dulled spot or two. One end has a little curl, aft of the
chinstrap button. The Vulkanfiber visor is in nice shape with a fair amount of
the original gloss remaining. The visor reverse (underside) is reddish-tan and,
in fact, the interior is regulation matching colors with the natural leather
sweatband also reddish-tan, and the woven cotton lining a slightly paler
“rust” (i.e. light reddish-tan) color. Interesting that the sweatband was
apparently not long enough originally, so an extra piece was added to one end
where the overlap would normally be, to cover the gap – no surprise, as the
lining beneath the fully intact moisture shield is stamped with a size of
“60”, making this example pretty large! The reverse of the sweatband
has a maker’s name stamped in black ink, but this is partly obscured by the
attachment stitching and only “Mützenfabrik, Jena“ (Cap Factory, Jena)
remains legible. The interior is in really nice shape, and the cap overall rates
near excellent. Nice Other Ranks Panzer visor!
