HG-10 Army Other Ranks Model 1934 Feldmütze
(Garrison / Overseas Cap), with Pionier Soutache
This Model 1934 is a tiny cap – about a size 53, or 52 -
hard to believe any man could have had a head small enough to fit it - but there
it is! The cap has a black Pionier Branch Soutache on the front, perhaps beside
Panzer pink, the single most desirable branch color. The wool has a somewhat
early look, being a very classic, green-hued field grey, with an extremely short
nap. Somewhat unusual and more representative of secondary manufacture (i.e.
outsourced to cottage industry) is the fact that the top edge of the side skirt
is only hemmed with one line of stitching instead of the usual two parallel
lines. The cap has a ventilation grommet on each side. The eagle insignia is
machine woven in matte dull grey thread on a field grey woven rayon background
and is very neatly hand-applied to the cap’s upper front. The cockade, on the
other hand, is the earlier style on a dark blue/green woven rayon diamond and
likewise very neatly applied. The interior has a very basic, somewhat coarse
textured white cotton lining that is lightly soiled over most of its surface,
though this looks more due to age than any wear (the cap really has no sign of
physical wear). Toward the right inside rear there is an RB Number stamped in
purple ink “0/0538/6382” and additional faint traces of one or two other
marks not clear enough to make out. It has a small pinhole nip or two to the
exterior, which is practically unnoticeable, but is otherwise an excellent
example of what is likely a cottage industry-made cap.
